Awning Poles

Any good ideas for collapsible awning poles that are not as expensive as telescoping poles? We''ve been using PVC, cut in 3 pieces, but in high winds, they come apart. (About 10'' wide)

Awning Poles

Sadie14,

Don''t think these will be sturdy enough to replace what you having been using but they may come in handy somehow...I used kite spar for support in my cockpit canopy...it is very strong, yet flexible enough to bend with the wind a little rather than break. You can cut it in the lengths you need and there are little connectors to join pieces.

Sorry, I probably should explain the the PVC is not breaking, just the connection points are popping, so the poles are no longer connected and the awning is not supported.

I don''t know what a kite spar is. Can you explain further, please.

Kite spars are the "backbone" in kites...the big, expensive stunt kites. They are like PVC pipe except solid, not hollow...and usually they are small in diameter...like maybe 1/2 inch or so. I used them in the "roof" of my canopy and they worked quite well.

Try drilling a few holes in the PVC and connectors and running a few bolts and wing nuts to hols it all together. Quick and easy assembly. Just remeber there may be more chafe near the bolts...

Just another thought. Why not get some stock bungee cord and thread it through the PVC support poles and connecters ? This would keep them together and when you''re not using them allow you to fold them like the collapsable tent supports.
