Spiders don't like the wind...

...or so I'm told. I was cleaning the spider webs off my boat and a dock neighbor told me that spiders like to build their webs behind a wind break when possible. After thinking about that, it made sense as rarely do I have any webs forward of the cockpit area. So I decided to try out his theory by backing into my slip so the stern, motor well and cockpit is facing the prevailing southerly wind. Anyone out there every heard of this?

The spiders on my boat didn't get the memo.

Neither did my spiders. One of their favorite web-sites is between my upper and lower shrouds, or between by upper and lower lifelines-- seemingly wind-prone areas.
During the day they hunker down in hidden spots, but at night they build their webs in very exposed places.

I agree there might be a few spiders that like a stiff breaze. I usually don't get webs between the shrouds. Mine have always been concentrated in those areas where the cabin blocks the wind. We'll see after a few days if it helped.

If I was a spider I would build my web where the food is.

Re: Spiders don't like the wind...

We often have 'free' telltales in the form of long web strands off the backstay and shrouds, so our spiders aren't checking their memos either....

Re: Spiders don't like the wind...

We have spider webs all the way up our shoulds and stays too.
Just recently I found Landseer hair on the leech of the main, it was quite helpful.

We have three rules;
No screaming.
No bleeding on the sails.
No slobbering on the charts.

Faster, it sounds like you should rent your spiders out.

Re: Spiders don't like the wind...

We get spiders on our boat on a mooring about 1/4 mile from shore.
They either walk on water or fly with the wind. Perhaps both.

Re: Spiders don't like the wind...

Our hitch hikers must have written than memo so we don't look for them there.

On our sat trip to NE and the LI Sound we watched the same spider rebuild its web every evening on our davit ends. He hid by day in major winds and seas, only to reappear by night to spin a marvelous picturesque bug trap.

Very industrious and very stubborn. Kind of hard not to admire its tenacity.

Dave
