What are the costs of owning a sailboat minus the boat itself?

What I'm really trying to ask is, are their taxes, liscenceing fees, registration insurance, etc, that I would need once I buy a boat for 6K to 12K?

I hope I asked this correctly? I'm new at this, tho I am a Navy Veteran.

Short answer is yes to most of those. Taxes definitely unless you are in a tax free state. License depends on your age and state. Then don't forget storage (slip or mooring if not trailered), insurance if in a slip or mooring may be required depending on the marina.

Saweet, Thanks for the speedy reply. So with respect with License, where would I get the license from, I can't imagine the DMV, lol. Is there a requirement to getting the license, also is mooring the thing where your boat is anchored out in the water away from the Slips?

Also, this boat will be my wife and I's permanent home, were cutting off land and living aboard. That's why I ask about mooring

By "license" I really mean boating safety certificate. US Power Squadron, USCG Auxiliary or your state can provide the (classroom) training and test.

And yes. The mooring is where you are tied up to a mooring ball away from the slips.

Re: What are the costs of owning a sailboat minus the boat itself?

Some states you pay one upfront excise tax based on the value of the boat. Others there is an annual personal property tax ... Or both.

Boat
Excise or property tax
Launch costs/haul costs at Marina
Insurance
Marina slip fees
Fuel
Safety equipment (required by USCG)
Maintenance (engine, bottom paint, deck, sails)

Do I need to anchor out next to these balls? Can't I anchor out farther away from the marina to where I don't pay them.

Re: What are the costs of owning a sailboat minus the boat itself?

Whether you can anchor nearby depends on your location. Plus, you tie up to the mooring balls but you don't anchor next to one.

I would highly suggest that you take a boating safety course from one of the above mentioned organizations before you get in too deep.

What part of PA are you in? I'm in Chester County.

AlyMel, if you are going to be on a mooring, there are two things to consider. Where will you access your mooring ( dinghy) from land? What are you going to do for electrical power ... You may need solar.

Glad you have scaled back from the original notion of staying in international waters.
