What are you doing to deter birds

I know this has been discussed in the past, but you never now what new inventions might have been developed by sailors to keep birds off the boat.

I taped a pinwheel to a stick and hauled it up the main halyard so it ended up just above the mast top. It seemed to work, but it didn't last long. One of the blades broke off and that was all she wrote. What are others doing to keep birds of the mast, particularly big birds like osprey?

We usually have a wind generator up but have not had a chance to install it yet this year(next week). In the interim I have a solar powered owl whose head rotates. Seems to work pretty good. Have him mounted on the solar panel frame. $30 from Amazon.

Re: What are you doing to deter birds

I was in Key West for a few days and the shags were horrendous!
As I wasmoving on a temp measure was to send some supermarket plastic bags up the signal halyards. the flapping kept them off the spreaders.

Re: What are you doing to deter birds

osprey seem to not like tarps....so i have some ...the seagulls that land on boat get killed and so do the cute lil skeeter eating sparrows/swallows wtf they are....bubba deaded 2 in 4 days..oops.....he cannot kill a booby-- they land on the pointiest end of sprit...they also attack my guests in cockpit of my boat--landing on shoulders and pecking at ears...surprising what those crazy boobies will do...and frigates seem to dislike tarps on boats--isnt a constant ground below--it flutters in breezes..works well, as it flutters differently each flutter...
pelicans dont land on my boat--one tried, and both bubba and i shooed it away.
these mexipelicans seem to not mind folks-=-they will land on the boats of cruisers living on board and derelict alike....and pangas not used in one day have pelicans all over them---
