G26 Anchor compartment hatch mod

Hello all,

I have a g26 that I am starting a refurib on, and I was wondering if anyone had ever retrofitted a deck hatch at the bow to access the small storage compartment to the head of the v-berth. I realize that the compartment access from the v-berth would have to be sealed up (I am planning to re-glass that whole bulkhead anyway). I am a little concerned that it might weaken the bow area somewhat, bet I will be replacing the bow fitting with a new SS one. Lust wondering if anyone has done this, and if it is worth the effort.

Thanks

Craig,
Clear Lake, Tx.

Re: G26 Anchor compartment hatch mod

I thought about that on my first boat, a G26. It's easier now with modern materials.
Make yourself a bulkhead out of G-10 (premade fiberglass sheets) and tab it in to the existing sides, it should be fine.

Re: G26 Anchor compartment hatch mod

It's a do-able project.. we did it on our last boat, a 40 footer that only had the small deck hawse pass-through.

We glassed a floor in the forward compartment, added a drain hole through the side of the hull, then cut out the 'hatch' from the deck, reused that as the hatch after sealling all the edges (in deck and on hatch), added some cleats for the hatch to rest on, a pair of hinges and it was done. It was a vast improvement.

Be sure to provide for proper drainage of that area..

btw we didn't glass the bulkhead in, we added a single piece drop board iinside the compartment (on the fwd edge of the bulkhead) and another in the V berth area for 'looks'. With good drainage we never had water in the V berth from there. And we maintained access that way if needed...
