Charlevoix to the Apostles

Having purchased a 31 ft.sailboat, I'm preparing to sail it from Charlevoix, MI to Bayfield WI in early August. We'll be transiting the Soo Locks and following the south shore of Lake Superior, also traveling through the Keweenaw Waterway. I've sailed in the Apostles protected waters often, but the Superior south shore is unfamiliar. I have the Richardsons' chart book and guide.

Any information regarding ports of call along the way (we won't be sailing at night), transiting the Soo Locks, or other info is appreciated.

Re: Charlevoix to the Apostles

JM,

Sounds like a beautiful trip. Make your shakedown to Beaver Is.. It will carry you somewhat out of your way but give you a 30 mile sail to see what happens. They also have people on the island that can fix what is broken when you find it. From there it is a easy shot of 50NM to the bridge and Mackinaw City/St.Ignace, Mackanac Island (you will need a reservation in August. The trip over and up the St. Mary's will give you plenty of options for overnights.

Once you hit Superior your options for shelter become a lot more of an issue. A lot of people make the run from Whitefish Bay to Marquette. Munising is available 50 NM earlier if you need it. Without charts I cannot remember many other options along that stretch. Hopefully you have enough crew and equipment to make at least one overnight run.

Good Luck.

There are some Superior people on the board but not many. You might also post in the Lake Superior category in case some have it flagged.

Re: Charlevoix to the Apostles

The trip went according to plan with the exception of a small craft warning while in Houghton MI in the protected waters of the Keweenaw Waterway. We stayed over three nights to wait out the storm ( 9 ft waves and 35 mph wind gusts) and had a great last day to Stockton Island in the Apostles.
