Yes it is very protected, except sometimes you will get a few rough patches while crossing the bays.

We are in Slidell, LA. We have made that trip no less than thirty times over the years in boats from 23' to 35'. The barrier islands only offer protection if the wind has a southerly component, which is the norm throughout the summer months. Even in the summer months, sometime in the early morning hours, almost every night, the wind will come, with a northerly component. The water is skinny also, so it is important to be well off the island when the wind does shift. Should you ground, the bottom is very forgiving and we have never suffered damage. There is really no place to totally hide until you reach the eastern shore of Mobile Bay and enter the ICW there. That is where the best cruising of the area is had.
