Sailing down Mexican coast
My good friend and I wish to sail along the Mexican coast on a trip that will eventually take us to Patagonia. My friend is a good sailor, but I am new to it. To sail close to shore, and camping on the beach, how large of a boat is needed? How much experience would be required? Which side should we sail down, The Gulf or Pacific? We do not have a boat now and wish to spend as little money as possible on one. Also, I have heard that there are pirates, are they a threat?

If there are pirates they would be a threat, if they wern't a threat they wouldn't be pirates.

You are going to want a dry boat. That coastline is very cold, and wet. Even in the summer. If you have a dry boat you will also have living quarters, so camping would just be a plus. Not a necessary need.........i2f

So what would be the minimal size boat for his journey?

That depends on your comfort needs, and wallet. Everything is a compromise. My minimum need would be something over 30 ft. at the least, but that's me. To sail to Patagonia I would want something even bigger to carry supplies, and handle weather.........i2f

Thanks for your opinion. Everything I've read most people like a 30 or better for crossings like that.

It's been quite a few years but I still remember the penquins and some pretty interesting seas there.

Re: Sailing down Mexican coast
Patagonia is not for the ignorant. The water will be cold and not well charted with rugged coasts. No help will be near and challenging anchoring conditions. Perhaps some research is in order.
