Gulf Crossings

I know we had a late spring, but does anyone have any plans for a Gulf crossing?

I am interested in doing one, I plan on buying a good sailboat, but not yet.
Anyone who has crossed from Texas to Florida, or Cancun feel free to share any experiences or advice.

Hi Bill,

I did a long writeup on this about 18 months ago. I crossed in December-January. Not a good time to do it.

Do you need specific info or are you just looking for generalties? I can give advice on both.

If east bound crossing rivers ought to be fun if using ICW,most likely not possible.marc

Whats a minimal boat size to make a crossing like this? I was thinking about something in the 25 ft range to start out with but not sure what a 25ft ( I like the Catalinas) can handle?

May be going myself. How tall are you should be less than 50 ft?Weather will most probably influence whether GICW or off shore.Anchoring in gulf can be no fun & not many good anchorages between Galv, & Ms.MANY oil rigs to Ms off shore.marc

Yes I want both. I'm shopping for a good sailboat to do it in. And other than giving hurricane season a miss, when is a good time. I know in December the Gulf is somewhat stormy. SO late fall after the last named storm, or late spring after the last major cold front.
Those are the best times for offshore fishing anyway.

Best time is probabaly april or May. I did December - January and it was pretty bumpy. COld fronts are probably more of a concern that Hurricanes in my opinion.
