Pop Top on 25' Helms

Looking to purchase a 1976 Helms 25', with the pop top option.
What issues does the pop top have?
Leaks? Seals? warping? hinges?
Where would I find the enclosure/Canvas?
Any and all comments are much appreciated.

warm regards,
Tayzay

Tayzay,
I've got a pop top and enjoy the standing head room when at anchor. I always seem to damage the latches, but don't have leakage issues. I don't know of any source short of having a canvas shop make one for you. My tent is blue Sunbrella that adds screened zip windows and companionway access screens and rain flap doors. I have several pix posted

here and what Helms 25?

Thanks for the reply. Great pics of Chimera! Good to know that your pop top doesn't leak, etc.
the Helms 25 we are kooking to buy is on it's trailer. Wrapped in 6 tarps since the fall off 2007. Owner claims it is a dry boat.
It may have mast plate damage due to a "bad" repair. Also dry rot above the
V berth. What would be a ball park estimate for fixing?
Thoughts and opinions are welcomed.

Tayzay:
I have a 1976 Helms 25 pop-up. I'm glad to say I have no issues with it. I don't have the canvas for it, but its on my wish list.
Can't help you with the repair estimate. I had a soft deck in the same area between the small hatch and the raised deck. It was caused by leaky bolts on the small hatch hinges. I repaired the deck myself.
Good luck on the purchase.

What mast plate? The base of the mast has a foot (cast alum fitting) that hinges to the shoe (cast alum bolted on deck) any real issues for those lemme no, I can help. I can machine or weld that thing into next year.

Deck soft spot, estimate?

Resin hardner and glass fabric $150.00
Hours of labor 20-30 (done at home)
Lessons learned: Priceless

Really a lame ass answer I know..(justification coming) I'm a hands on guy so I would do it m'self if at all capable and think you should do the same. It gives you more time w/boat.
Wayne repaired his foredeck as did Roberto. Wayne did a "neat' repair I think via liquid impreg. Roberto removed the fordeck from the inside replaced w/ plywood and reglassed (upside down) using boards to prop up repair and backer plate.

Hi All
We are the proud owners of a 1976 Helms 25! Forgot to get the hull# on Saturday. We bring her home to Tawas,Michigan (Lake Huron) on May 1st.
She has been a freshwater boat on the hard SW of Chicago.
Hull is solid. Comes with a 2006 15hp 4 stroke Honda o.b. that has been used 4-5 times and been stored in doors since 2007. Trailer is in good condition.
The original sails are Excellent!! very crisp and clean with no breaks in any of the stitching. Lots of additional gear and equipment. anchor, chain, lines, fenders, man overboard, life jackets, Roller furling for head sail, spinnaker pole, new porti potty, Screen/cover for pop top, brand new main sail cover, minor leak below two of the cabin windows and water stain along the outer edge of V berth cushion coming from the behind the board at the bow. Crazing at 3 of the deck plates.
winches have been re-conditioned. She a bit dirty, so a power wash and scrub down is firstst on the to-do list. Standing rigging looks to be in good condition. No snagging meat hooks. Unable to check the centerboard thoroughly, but will assume it is also in good condition. Time will tell.
No electronics, batteries or dingy.
Look forward to tapping into the vast knowledge available and offered thru this forum.....
Thanks for your input and Yes, we'll be doing the work ourselves.
Warm Regards,
Tina and John

Tina & John:

Congratulations!! Sounds like you have a nice find. Interesting to see what your hull number is as I also have a 76. Have fun sailing.
