Considering Purchasing a Helms 30

Hello everyone,

I happened upon a Helms 30 for sale and I'm intrigued. I'm a former Tartan30 owner, and have sailed a variety of other boats in the size range.

Questions for anyone:

This boat is fairly narrow (9'2" beam) compared to the Tartan (etc), where do you notice it? What do you like about the boat, what don't you? Sail area is close to the other 30's with a somewhat shorter boom but a little taller main.

No Genoa lead cars or tracks, looks like blocks on the toerail. How does it point? Has anyone mounted a track inside the lifelines?

Does anyone still race? I'm not racing like I used to, but I do still like an occasional race. Any tricks for rigging or sail type or design?

This boat is cheap enough that I can justify some goodies so, any suggestions for cabin or deck layout improvement?

Thanks,

Mark Meyer

Mark:
I have a Helms 25, but I hope a Helms 30 owner will answer your questions soon. From what I can remember there are not that many 30's around anymore. I have heard nothing but good things about them, but have never sailed on one.

Hello everyone, I can see by the quiet nature of the board, that I shouldn't expect much response to my inquiry. Is there a better place to get assistance with my quest for Helms 30 Info. I found that Yahoo group, but it is dead as well. Hoped there might be files or photos that might be helpful. Can't get the list owner to approve me. So where are the guys with the Helms 30s? Even other small volume 30s such as the Yankee30 has a active community. Anyone know how many Helms30s were made?
