Brindisi Area?

Greetings, All,

I'd appreciate any information about sailing opportunities in the area of Brindisi, Italy, as I will likely be relocating there around the first of the year. There's not lot of information available on the web regarding that part of the Adriatic, which doesn't seem to get much attention from the cruising community.

I would initially be interested in renting or perhaps purchasing a boat up to about eight meters for daysailing and occasional weekend trips in the area between Bari and Otranto, but would be available to crew on OPB's as well.

Is an international certificate of competency required for foreign sailors and, if so, would a U.S. Sailing Bareboat Cruising certification satisfy that requirement? Are insurance or berthing costs prohibitive? What are conditions like along that coastline (I've read the cruiser's wiki)? Would one perhaps be better served by looking across the penninsula to the Bay of Taranto? Is there an established community of recreational sailors in the area?

All information appreciated. Thanks in advance for the help.
