whisker pole

I am looking for a whisker pole for our 49' custom built cutter rigged sloop. I would prefer a line controlled pole and not one that is stowed on the mast. I have looked at the Forespar 15-27 but it says it is not meant to be used in more than moderate winds i.e. up to 16knots.

In my experience you really don't need a whisker pole once you get into the stronger winds, but it can make life easier.

Am I looking at a custom built pole, or would the 15-27 do the job? What have others experienced with this type of sailing.

We also have a gennaker but only use that in light winds.

Why not on the mast? A pole for a 49 will be big heavy and awkward to handle

Re: whisker pole

I wonder how safe a whisker pole mounted on the mast would be in heavy weather. I've read that they can come down onto the deck in rough seas.
Can someone give me some input about these issues.
