Hello, I'm Joabe. Despite being 27, a poor student, and far from the coast I've joined this and several other sailing forums. I've gotten this, possibly crazy, idea of transferring my education to a college on the east coast and finding a small boat to live on while finishing up the last year or so of my degree. Possibly misguided but it's something I'm giving serious thought.
Where in Indiana? I know there is a pretty active sailing community on Bookville lake, used to sail there as a kid (before you were born!). There is a nice little pond on the north west corner as well. Lots of folks living on the water all along the east coast. Folks live from Maine to Florida on the water, so not so crazy, but likely more expensive than a typical college student apartment. What area, and what would be budget be for the boat? Do you have any sailing experience? Certainly not being near the coast is no excuse for not at least getting in some seasonal sailing. Small boats for lakes in Indiana can be had for short money depending on what you are looking for.
I'm about 3 hours from Bookville but I don't have any sailing experience. Practically right next to Patoka Lake, though. Currently this is just an idea I've been kicking around which I couldn't implement until around this time next year at the very earliest... Probably two is more realistic of a timetable subject to change depending on future circumstances.
Crazy idea? You will only find out if you do it. So if serious go for it, if the lake you are near has boaters on it hang out down at the docks, ask questions, offer a helping hand, you would be surprised at what results.
If it is your dream then go for it, you just may find your true calling. But if you ignore it, you will constantly question whether you should of done it or not, so just go for it pursue your "crazy idea."
The main question is what are your expectations, that make you consider the idea?
Been a long time since I spent much time in that part of the state (back in the 50's we'd go to Lake Lemon (Bean Blossom). Depending on how much you're willing to commute, you could live on one of the Tennessee River lakes.
Youtube videos of people making ocean crossings and documenting the travels of their boat got me interested in pursuing this. The idea of maintaining something that I could potentially have the ability to sail all over the world is excites me, although I'd be sure to prepare and actually know what I'm actually doing before even thinking of attempting something like that.
Any major commutes are currently iffy until next summer with my classes starting back up soon. There's a marina nearby right on the Ohio River that might be worth checking out, though.

Greetings! A possible not crazy idea, you wouldn't be the first person to have "different" accomodations while in college. And, those accomodations could go with you after college, wherever that might be.
