Newcomer to sailing
I am interested in starting with a small boat, perhaps a sunfish. There is a small beach club near my house where you can keep boats in the water tied off to a floating dock. Can a Sunfish stay in the water for an entire season? Does the daggerboard come out or stay in place if it is left in the water?
If I go another route and take it to a public boat launch, how do you get it off the trailer. It would be myself and my wife who is not particularly strong. Forgive my ignorance, but these basic questions have me scrathing my head trying to figure out how to make this work.
We spent the better part of 2 days of the July 4 weekend sailing a Sunfish and really got excited and would like to get a boat.
If anyone can help answer these questions I would greatly appreciate it.
A few thoughts
I wouldn't recommend keeping a Sunfish in the water, though some may disagree. There's no good way to keep it covered on the water, so you'd find yourself with mucky water in the footwell, grunge on the bottom, and probably bird poop on the deck. In addition, I don't think it's very practical to rig a floating Sunfish ... that's a lot easier while it's on a trailer or tied up at the beach or in the shallows.
That said, find one with a trailer or a dolly and you can probably still keep it at the club. You'll be able to cover it, and pop in the mast and sail on the hard. Launching with a trailer or dolly is very easy.
