Oh no not another one!!
Well i don't normally do these introduction forum messages but here goes.

I am in the 30ish year old bracket and i have come to be connected with this site through researching my biggest project (next to starting a family).

I am going to build a boat. It will be in the size region of 65'. I intend to retire on it and see bits of the world that i have so far missed and will miss by building a boat. I am competent crewman trained which i did with the army some time ago. It is not so much the sailing i want but the sailing of my creation that I'm after.

My background to this project is that i have my own small engineering firm and have been a coded welder for the past 18-20 years. I have built a great number of things from F1 cars in the UK to oil rigs in Dubai. I am now well settled in New Zealand where i am bringing up my family.

I am under no illusions and am aware that for every success story there is hundreds of failures. The things i need to get sorted and that i am spending the most time on are PLANS. I have done as much research as i can through the net on trying to buy ready made plans (just add money) to chartering my own designer and getting custom build drawings. As i have said the hull is not my fear factor. I will be building from either alloy or steel, still to decide. Have heard fores and against for both.

Well i think thats enough of an introduction for now. If anyone thinks there are some good threads to read or links to look at feel free to drop me a line. Please not all doom and gloom.

Wishing you all a Happy New Year

Happy New year Matt,

Here is a website from a pair of your fellow Kiwis who are living your dream. Long White Cloud

I met Stephen and Paula Pepperell in the fall of 2008 when they gave a slide show at Barrington Yacht Club (Rhode Island, USA) covering the construction of their dream yacht and first half of their voyage. They are currently in Florida on their return trip to New Zealand. You can follow their progress on their sailblog and keep inspired.
Best Luck!

Thats a good insight with that web site. Especially as they were only 2hrs down the road from me. I have dropped them a mail and will see if i get anything back.

Hi! New here myself. Good luck with building that boat, I will be watching for posts about it. Have you built any boats that size before?

I am an F1 fan too.. what cars have you worked on?

When Tyrell were in there final years i worked with them to get the last races complete. Then i went to Ledbury to work for a company called Eurpean formula racing. They managed the Arows 2 seater experience. In 2001 i think they bought out minardi and I moved to Jordan for 3 months. I was a contractor so never spent long in any one place. Had a short stint with Jaguar but left the racing teams to pursue more stable work. Fabricator is not the high glam that F1 conjures up, in fact you are considered the necessary dinosaur, if you want the glamor you need to be either a driver or in the pre-preg lamination department.

This will be the first boat this small that i have built. I worked in Holland on the Disney Liner which at the time was the largest in the world but i think it has been surpassed a couple of times. I have put Oil rigs together and inspected them for surveyors to sign off. But never a boat this size. The strange thing is it is the fitting out that daunts me the most.

I look forward to posting developments and hopefully some photos, but it may be a while yet.
