Homeless newb

Hi all!

Wanted to take a minute to introduce myself. I have very limited sailing experience and most of it is in my past. I have always dreamed about owning a sailboat and doing the whole live aboard thing but until recently I never really thought it would be possible.

I have been living on the coast of NC for the past few years where I was fortunate to go sailing with friends on some 30ish type boats. I don't live there anymore but then again I don't really live anywhere right now. So after some long talks with the wife we really want to give living aboard a try. Over the next year we are going to attend some couples type sailing schools and spend a couple weeks chartering. Within 18 months I want to own a boat and be ready to set off. Our schedule will be something along the lines of heading out for three months and then spending three months working. One day we would like to go out for a year or so and eventually do an ocean passage. The wife wants a Cat and after sailing one the other day in Cape Town I have to say that I can't blame her!

Ok, sorry to be long winded! Should I start a new thread on the destinations or buying a boat page for advice or will this do?

Thanks in advance and thanks for all the information so far! This website has been great!

Welcome aboard.

I suggest checking out some live-aboard blogs:

Here are a couple:

We Live On A Boat

Loose Moorings

There are lots of others; but these are the only ones I have handy

Adding a welcome and wishing you the best of luck, and oh, I can't resist a little self-promotion: Life Afloat

Yeah, that's the fun of meeting IRL the folks you've been emailing for years!

Are the two Canadian blogs you refered to friends of yours? The one guy is quite a good writer. But not to further hijack av8's thread - maybe I'll start a new thread in the "living aboard" forum for links to good blogs.
