new member asking for advice
46 years old. i have enjoyed sailing since about 10 on and off . I have recently purchased my 3rd trailable yacht a cattalina boomaroo 25 .this boat has a very heavy tiller while motoring and suffers from weather healm as it get over about 8 to 10kn at 15kn it wants to round up.I have dropped the fence at the pulpit to allow the genoa to pass through and increased mast bend ,i keep genoa sheeted on and depower the main it has improved but could be better . I am going to try moving the top pintle aft next to see if it helps. any tips appreciated regards gimson

Hey gim - welcome to SN dude. Though the following comment will draw howls of laughter from my fellow SNers (because I'm a super lousy sailor) my "advice" is that if you're experiencing that much weather helm, you've got too much sail up. I'd say reef and ease the main - and reduce your genny as well.

What do you guys think? Am I learning anything? Or is it hopeless?

Of course, if you want to "dip a rail" - I think you're already on the right track.

Hopefully this will bring along a few sailors that actually know what they're doing.

I'm not specifically familiar with your boat model. But generally speaking, you shouldn't need to reef in 8-10 knots wind. A single reef may be advisable once you get to 15 knots true, if you're sailing upwind.

You mention that the boat is trailerable, which suggests to me that you rig/derig it fairly routinely. That opens up more possibility for the rig to be improperly tuned.

One thing that can cause excessive weather helm is too much mast rake. If you've ever done any windsurfing/boardsailing, you'll remember that pulling the mast aft turns the boat up into the wind. The same thing happens with a fixed-rig. Excessive mast rake usually results in too much weather helm.

You might try experimenting by decreasing the length of the headstay/forestay, and increasing the length of the backstay. In small increments. (You likely will also have to adjust the shroud length/tension to do this). Some moderate weather helm is desirable, so you definitely don't want the mast leaning forward, which could lead to lee-helm.
