Buying a sailboat

I am the new guy. I am searching for a sailboat. Done some sailing, done some antique car restorations, done a lifetime of maintenance work and know my way around a toolbox and hardware store. Know very little about sailboats. I do not want a major fixer upper.

Why is it there are so few schooners on the market? Can a ketch be readilly converted to a schooner?

While you can't cure stupid, you can teach away ignorance. Help!!!

Few schooners on the market because few modern schooners are built. Anything can be converted to anything else, if you have enough time and money. The question is, why?

If you haven't ever sailed before I would necisarrily be looking at schooners, something much smaller and much cheaper would be better suited in my opinion.

Something like a daysailer or a small trailerable that needs a little TLC is usually a good pick for new sailor looking to get into the venture.

If you're looking for a good solid boat for sailing away into the sunset, I'd heartily recommend a Westerly Seahawk. Very seaworthy, easy to sail, comfortable to live on.
