New to it all

Hello folks,

My wife and I are nearing retirement and just had an Irwin 39 fall into our laps. Neither of us has ever owned a boat this large, nor has either of us ever sailed before, but we have a large group of friends who have ample experience with vessels of this size.

We purchased the boat from one of these, someone we both know and trust. Currently we are looking at sailing schools in our area to compliment the training we receive while out with these friends.

The deck, hull, lines, sails and engine are all in very good shape, it’s the interior cabin woodwork that needs a lot of help.

Having been a woodworker for many years now, the refinishing and replacement of some wood is well within my ability, but working with a boat is not like building a piece of furniture for the home. Already, I have a number of questions that I’ll start a thread for.

For the most part I’ll stick to questions regarding the restoration. I’m sure most of the sailing questions I’ll have are already answered here somewhere, but finding someone with boat woodwork restoration experience has been, well…an experience. I may chime in on other threads to get clarification, but I promise, I’ll search first before asking a bunch of questions.

So, very new to it all, please forgive me if I call the head a bathroom or make some other egregious mistake in terminology. Feel free to correct me at any time.

Beyond the woodworking, my wife and I are avid fly-fishing types, we do the gardening thing, raise chickens and produce maple syrup on our little farm here in Michigan. We plan to reach out and touch all of the Great Lakes at some point, but for now we’ll keep her on the waters of Lake St. Clair.

Sorry I’m half a calendar late in welcoming you, I was thumbing through the “Introduce Yourself” thread and came across your post, so welcome to SN and to Lake St Clair. Just like you I am new to this group, but find everyone friendly and helpful. I have a 25 ft Catalina I have been sailing for 20 + years on Lake St Clair. Her name is Adventure and I keep her on the Clinton River. So if you see us out there next season sail up and say hello. Best of luck on your projects and keep warm this winter. Glen
