Newbie from Toronto

Hi everyone!

I'm the wife of an enthusiastic and dedicated sailor, who has sailed as a kid and picked it up again 2 years ago. He loves sailing... and I've gotten into it as well, hooked by his enthusiasm.

I tried studying on Albacores like him, but the first time I turned over I panicked and refused to return. So, I'm a nervous sailor and like keel boats immensely for their stability. I love the freedom, the water, the "simplicity" (lack of machinery that errors can hide behind), and most of all the fact that it's something that creates gorgeous memories.

We have a Paceship 26 which he's races with friends and club (successfully), while I'm learning how to do the simpler things and figure out basic sail points. We're planning to "quit the rat race" and within 5 years start sailing down the coast. This means a lot of financial prep... and also a new boat?

I'm curious about all the differences that exist in boats, and thus I'm here to do research on what are the characteristics of a sailboat that should be important to us for a sail down the Eastern coast/Caribbean. In other words, I'm here to learn!

Your friendliness and patience is appreciated. Thanks for the welcome! :-)

Cheers,
Olya

Welcome. There is a lot to learn, and much experience here. There are also many different ways to do it. Keep sailing, keep reading. There are also cruising blogs. Look up Eryka on this site and read her blog. Also find Interview with a Cruiser. Fair winds.
