From the mountains to the sea

Hi there,
My name is Tobias. I am 41 year old single guy, live in Colorado and run a successful business. After being land-locked for almost 20 years, I want to return to the ocean. I used to work on an ice breaker in Antarctica and spent about a year on a private motor yacht.
My dream is to sail around the world. I have no idea how to get started from Colorado as the sailing is a bit rough from here to either coast .
So I am collecting ideas, doing research, learning new skills and selling assets to buy a boat and make the transition to the water.
I have a big dog that I'd like to take along and I need to find a home for my two cats as they already told me 'no way'.
