Time to introduce myself to you people! I started sailing by taking lessons two years ago and rented a number of different boats since then. So did my wife, all of it and together with me 
This year, we bought an old French 20ft cruiser for frequent daysailing on a nearby lake. Soon we're going to work our way up to something bigger on the open sea - under our own responsibility.
It is always good to know how other people handle certain things, and this is a nice place to find out.
