mquin.... just browse the forums here and get your post count up, then you can PM Gary yourself.

btw it's not a good idea to put your email in plain/linked form - too easy for spambots to get you in their sights. I've edited yours.

Mario, Welcome to the Net. While you wait for a response from Gary Lucas, consider looking into the catalina22.org site. I would urge you to join the c22 National Sailing Association. You'll receive their quarterly publication (MainBrace) and their site has many links to sites created by c22 owners who have documented the many projects they have done on their boats. Also, you can get an excellent video from 'Catalina Direct' and a template for fairing the keel that many have used to repair/refinish their keels. Another good site is SailboatOwners.com. There's a good c22-specific forum there with numerous threads on all things c22.

On my c22, I followed the instructions in the video from Catalina Direct to refair and refinish my keel. It was well worth the price, and their technical staff is very helpful. I myself used West Systems epoxy as a barrier coat and a fairing compound whose name I have forgotten. But since refairing, barrier coating, and repainting my keel, there is no sign of rust, delamination of the fairing material, nothing.

Hope this helps. Very general, I know. If you have a specific repair question, please ask here or start a new thread. Lots of folks here with tons of experience who are eager to help.

Fair winds,

Pat

BTW, I am in no way connected to Catalina Direct except as a customer. I am a member of the c22 NSA, but I receive no benefit from the organization for encouraging other c22 owners to join.

Pat,

Thank you for the input.... This is my second Cat 22.. I had one about 6 years ago, and a buddy (Randy Nettel) and I took over Fleet 17 in Galveston Bay, and had a great time... We were even Fleet of the year.... but as things happen... we all moved up.. I own a Cat 27 and Randy who kept his Cat 22 also has a 36 foot Ketch, But to be honest... the Cat 22 bunch was a lot more fun then the big boats....and you can take them home to work on them.

I bought my present Cat 22 at a marina auction and decided to fix her up, I still have a bunch of parts, and sails from my first boat, and Randy took over the fleet again... so I need a small boat to go play.

I have dropped a keel before and had it fixed at a machine shop, but was interested in Garys' fix... 30 min, with some epoxy... I would think that the Keel would be too heavy, and wear through the epoxy... maybe if he epoxyed a bushing in the wallowed hole, it might work....

I have seen his name on several sights but don't know if he is still around.

Thanks again for the input... and I probably will join up again, It was a real fun bunch and I really wanted to do the North Gulf Coast Cruise.

Thanks again

Mario in Galveston Bay
