Newbie soaking up as much info. as i/we can

My husband and I are on a 6 year plan to get our youngest off to college and then sell the house and move onto a boat. We have traveled extensively throughout the Caribbean and own some land in the Abacos. We want to get away from the big yard and house, and have talked about this move for several years now. Trying to decided between power and sail. Lots of experience with power, little to none sailing, so thinking about taking some lessons to see how we do. Anyways, I don't have much to add to your forum, but much to gain. Thanks!

There are tons of videos on youtube that are sailing lessons. Many by a company called expertvillage. They can give you an idea of the work involved in sailing compared to a power boat. Not that you would use these in lieu of actual lessons, w/ little experience I would not sail on the ocean.

Absolutely! Thanks for the info. My hubby is as type "A" as they come. We would never set out without extensive training and research. Thanks again!!!

Welcome to Sailnet... keep in mind this is a sailing forum so you're unlikely to get much in the way of 'pro power' recommendations.. Given your plans and destination sail does make more sense (see? ) We've spent a fair amount of time island hopping the Caribbean chain and power cruisers are extremely rare.

The Bahamas may well be different given their proximity to Florida, however.

Power will give you 'more square feet' for a given length, but you're completely reliant on the engine at all times. Sail is ultimately more economical, more reliable and will provide a more stable, comfortable ride in the rough stuff. Not to mention more interesting and more active.

However you go, lots to learn here.

You can also sign up on crew lists to see if you even like sailing. I love it, but it's certainly not for everybody. In SF, we have two on line crew lists - SF Sailing and Latitude 38. I take complete novices out all the time. Maybe there is something similar in your area. Search -sailing crew list.
