Mcpsych is on a distinguished road
mcpsych and Didiki

greetings and salutations
i live in Brisvegas ( actually ipswich but brisbane Qld OZ is the closest port city)
I have done some sailing but the largest sailing vessel i have previously owned was a 13 foot surfcat. So a 30ft steel bilge keel will be a different experience once she is on the water
( i am having trouble uploading pictures to the blog on sailnet hence this blog)
fair winds all
cheers

Hi, and welcome. Mexican of the Cockroach variety here...34' steel sloop which we've had now for around five years. Anything I can help you with, just ask.

Now you cannot post links and pics until you have ten posts. Its supposedly an anti-spam thing. Wander around the forums for a while. I'd be very surprised if you cannot find ten questions to ask.

Coule of questions for you though...Didiki....30' twin masts....ketch or schooner ? why twin masts ?

rigging

my thinking currently is Ketch
twin masts- makes the sails smaller and hence more manageable, junk rigged because- simple rigging and i like the look
always open to suggestions
as i am going to build the masts i thought two smaller would be easier to make
am going with eight sided birdsmouth joinery at this stage
cheers

Ok....now I admit to preferring a bermuda/marconi rig over junk and cat rigs but lets leave that aside. I've read a fair bit of Blondie Hasler's stuff and can appreciate where junkers are coming from so I'm not totally averse.

But.

Why, when you already have a rig that is basically less efficient than bermuda would you further hinder the poor thing by cutting the rig up into a ketch ? I find it hard to believe that a 30' boat with a junk rig in any way shape or form needs to be ketch instead of single mast. The glory of a junk rig is the simplicity of shortening sail and the overall ease of handling. To my mind you are adding unnecessary complications.

On a thirty foot bermudan I would be saying much the same thing btw, meaning that imho 30' is too small for a split rig.

rgds

junk rig

heres the thing
1/i think junk rig looks prettier with 2 masts ( totally aesthetic consideration and i concede that it may well hinder performance)
2/the mast height becomes a consideration especially if i am making them - sourcing decent lengths of decent timber is a problem- yes i could go aluminium but then why would i bother with junk rig- i may as well then go bermudan eh
i take the point on single mast and as i havent done any drawings yet i will draw it in both configs and do the calcs for both
cheers

I agree with the fuzzball- although there is something appealing about the simplcity of the rig, she'll be no fireball, especially on a relatively short hull.

Here's a 42' steel junk rigged schooner (?):

ah well, of that there is no doubt. That's a Gazelle ?

btw..have you read up on Bill King ? He of Galway Blazer fame. Do so.

Not knowing what you plan to do once you have completed your vessel but GB was an entry in the first single handed round the world race which of course was won by Robin Knox Johnson though the most impressive performance was put in by Moitessier and his Joshua.
