New to Forum

Hello, I live in Miami and see the prospect of moving between San Diego and Santa Barbara California within the next 5 years. This combined with an interest in sailing has sprung the idea of sailing from Florida to California and living aboard once in California. Joined this forum to learn from the sailing community. The best way for me to learn is to get out there and get wet. For those of you that would like help in you sailing expeditions I, along with my girlfriend, would love to help. Looking forward to hearing from you folk.

Welcome aboard.
Start small, read "learn to sail" books, look for chances to sail. Read cruising and liveaboard blogs. Keep us posted.

Lu,

Buy a boat and do it! Long story short (as not to bore the others) We bought our Lancer 25 as a father-son thing. No trailer, no truck, no sailing experience. (but we considered everything BEFORE we cut the check). First time I bent on a jib was in Saco bay on the Atlantic. Since then we've sailed around 750 nm so far and cruise 3 out of 4 weekends in season.

So, use common sense and caution, but get out there! I wish I had done this 25 years ago.

Don

Thanks for the inspiration. I got a feeling its life changing and liberating, in a similar manner that riding motorcylces or a wrangler can be. Unfortunately my father has a power boat that he is working on and it will take time for him to see the advantages of a sailboat. I 'll keep you guys posted on progress.

Welcome aboard. Lots of motorcycle enthusiasts here. Bob Bitchin, publisher of Latitudes and Attitudes and former publisher of Biker Lifestyle, comes to mind.

But Sailing is Waaay better

Of course that is just my opinion, having retired after thirty years in the motorcycle business to go cruising under sail

Just registered to go check out the Miami Boat show coming in february. There are some seminars and am attending one concerning what to look for in a used boat. Also get to go sailing for the first time!

Qomomoko;
There's a free magazine Latitude 38 that might be of interest to you. It's a West Coast rag but covers the globe in the process. They also have a "Crew listing" Skippers looking for crew and crew looking for a boat to help on. If yo can't find a distributer, you can download it off the web, just look for Latitude 38.
There's another free mag, 48 degrees North, also good reading, but not as world wide as the prior.

Good luck in your search, maybe we can toss a couple down sometime (Non Alchohol for me, liver died).

Polynesian proposition

Hi guys,
I'm new here but a veteran at sea.
I married a Tongan, worked in the Philippines as a fisheries consultant, Papua New Guinea as a social development trainer, Cook Island fisheries dept. as a reef-life surveyer , dove the Clarion, Clipperton and Corn Island and now a collect tropical fish for a living.

I am looking for a boat to go fish collecting on in the South Polynesian waters...ie. Rapa and / or Pitcairn.
We are Tahitian company and hold collecting and export liscenses.

Anybody sitting in a yacht harbor in Polynesia looking to make a few quid?
Steve
