UCLA Sailing Adventures Inspiring Leadership
The Sailing Adventures Inspiring Leadership (SAIL) program, a part of UCLA UniCamp, is a program which reaches over 90 teens a summer. It teaches participants leadership, and the importance of teamwork and determination through a physically and mentally demanding week of sailing. We offer this experience to kids who are at or below the poverty line, qualify for free or reduced lunches at their schools, or come from foster homes. They are recruited from a number of different sources including social welfare programs, and from our mother entity, UCLA UniCamp.
For over 75 years, UniCamp has been empowering campers both young and old to dream big and to conquer insurmountable goals. During the sailing adventure, campers learn the basics of sailing so that participants have enough knowledge and first hand experience to sail on their own when they return to the city, hopefully using their experience to inspire other youth in their community. This unique experience combines the experiential leadership experience of sailing whilst promoting a sense of giving and community service. Everyday, participants will work on a project boat, which will then be sailed by future generations of campers. The purpose of the project boat is to instill community service values in the context of a leadership development program.
We appreciate any help in support of UCLA UniCamp’s SAIL program to provide underserved teens around Los Angeles the chance to sail and a chance to grow as leaders.
