Smile New To Sailnet Community/Question what type of boat should I buy?

Hi, I’m new to the Sailnet community, I join primarily to pick your brains, I’m looking to take the plunge and purchase a used sailboat before the spring of this year.

I’m looking for recommendations on the type of boat to purchase. I live in Southern New Jersey where there are shallow inlets so draft is important. Wind conditions are moderate for 3‐4 months and light for 2 so. I plan to sail most weekends between April and November and plan to cruise up or down the coast for a few weeks a year. I plan on sailing her singlehanded most of the time and realize some boats more than others are better suited for this purpose.

I’ve decided that I want a boat of 34’ -39’. From what I’ve seen a Cruiser is the likely candidate but frankly I would prefer a bit more performance than your typical production cruisers that dominate the used boat market. If you have a boat that you’re excited about and think would make a good contender and don’t mind sharing your thoughts I would appreciate here them.

Thanks Again

You left out some key pieces of information:

A) Have any experience?
B) What's your budget?

I would say don't buy without spending a season sailing on as many peoples' boats as you can get on to get an idea of what you like and don't. Assuming you have done that and can specify your price range, there are people here who can speak to the performance-oriented end of the spectrum, though I suspect shallow draft will be a challenge.

How did you decide on a boat from 34' to 39' for your purposes?

They are pricey (for me anyway) but look into the Seaward RK line. They sport a unique retracting keel that allow big boats access to thin water.

Welcome to SailNet!

Don't ask me. I have no idea.
