Return to boat ownership
I started cruising out of Portchester Hampshire about 45 years ago. So I cut my teeth on the Solent, the south coast of England and cross Channel trips to Cherbourg and the Channel. I moved to the US in the late 1970's and had a Sabre 27 for a while but the pressure of work meant that my time on a boat was constraint. Later I was able to do some racing, including one of the great adventures of my life the 3 peaks race from Barmouth to Fort William.
About 10 years ago I discovered Lake Champlain and sailed there frequently on chartered boats. It was on one of those charters that we came across the Beneteau 311; it was the boat for me. Last year I bought a used one and had a great season.
One of the surprises though was to see that the average size of boats has increased dramatically. When I started the cruising boat was a Folkboat ,about 21 ft, and the boat to aspire to was the Camper and Nicholson 31. Today, my 31 footer is one of the smallest on the lake. But to me she's fun
