Howdy from Northern IL

My name is Kristi and I am from Northern IL. My boyfriend has been sailing on and off for the past 20ish years and this summer will mark my first sailing summer (a few trips were made by myself with him at the end of summer 2011).

I thoroughly enjoy sailing and sailing with him; yet lately at night, I lay awake thinking up so many "worst case sailing scenarios" and the one that plays over and over in my head is him falling overboard. This worries me so because I have proven to consistently be able to actually do donuts on Lake Michigan in his 26 foot Chrysler (I seem to be a bit tiller challenged when we are not cruising along at a decent speed). This summer we plan on MOB drills and other educational days for me out on the water but as the time gets closer to launch, I find myself becoming scared of sailing but I don't know why...I love the feeling and the sounds of sailing, I like heeling (a lot). I think because I am eager to take off and go places, weather scares me (this seems to be another big fear of mine lately)?

Anyhow, I look forward to checking out the site here and finding answers to my irrational and newfound fears.

Welcome to Sailnet, pink. That isn't a reference to the Mutts comic is it? Love me some Mutts.

Weather is an important part of sailing (and staying alive while sailing). If I were you, I'd either take a class or find a good weather book to get you over the anxiety, learn how to forecast, what to do to avoid it, etc. Lee Chesneau is a highly regarded marine weather instructor.
