New to sailing, new to Chesapeake

Hello, all,

About a year ago, our family relocated from Michigan to Columbia, MD. Prior to Michigan, we were landlocked in Nashville, TN for several years. We've just discovered the beauty of the Annapolis area and the Chesapeake.

Within the last couple of weeks, my wife and I spent a day sailing with a captain as part of an "Intro to Sailing" adventure. Obviously designed to whet our appetites for further adventures, it worked. We had a wonderful time and are trying to figure out the next steps to take.

This looks like a fantastic forum full of great information. I look forward to browsing & searching, and hopefully "meeting" some of you!

We're a family of 4....we have 5- and 6-yr-old girls.....and we have always loved anything to do with the water....or heck, nature in general. The idea of taking a "camping" vacation on a sailboat someday sounds like a ton of fun to all of us....once properly trained, of course!

Welcome, indeed. Sailing is a fantastic family activity. Our kids grew up sailing in the Annapolis area. What a great way to foster independence while building family memories!

Welcome aboard Sailnet and welcome to sailing in general. You sound enthusiastic and motivated. Family camping trips are a great way to spend weekends aboard a boat.

Dont't be shy about asking questions around here. Lots of local folks to you with tons of experience and knowledge.

Re: New to sailing, new to Chesapeake

Well now you've done it! You moved to a prime sailing area so now you are going to go sailing.
I'd recommend that you and your wife take a basic keel boat course. You can take the course separately or together; for some couples taking the course separately may be better.
If you don't know someone with a sailboat there are several places on the Chessy where you can charter a sailboat. There is an outfit on the South River that is cheaper then the places in Annapolis or Rock Hall.
If you really like unspoiled natural settings then you will love the eastern shore. On my last visit to the Choptank River we saw Bald Eagles and rays. La Trappe creek made a wonderful overnight anchorage.

Welcome to sailnut.

Have Fun while the family is young. The art of sailing teaches everyone that the effort you put in to it is returned by proformance. Unlike traveling by car where you just push the pedal and go. When you sail you slow down and enjoy the world. Good Luck. Richard
