Hello from S. Padre Island, Tx

Well technically Harlingen, but that's where I'll be sailing. My dad was an avid sailer in the 80s, mostly on Harpoons and a Stiletto cat. I have memories of it a little, but I got interested in sailing about 5 or 6 years ago with the purchase of a Nacra 5.0. I sailed it a couple times, but it was too big a boat for me to setup and sail solo, so I sold it and played on a sunfish we had for awhile.

Now I'm on the lookout for a small sailboat I can relearn some things on and enjoy some of the bay with my family.

Surprisingly for the area there are hardly ever any boats up for sale so I have a feeling I'll be going on a road trip for a boat soon.

Just wanted to say hello and thank you for the site.

Re: Hello from S. Padre Island, Tx

Welcome, GD Byrd. The mere mention of South Padre brings me many warm memories; much of my childhood was spent on the island and many of my young adventures were there.

Much of the Laguna Madre is quite shallow, although there are a few selected spots where sailboats other than small cats and windsurfers could manage. Many years ago, there used to be racing out of Laguna Vista, and more recently a yacht club toward the back side of Port Isabel. But, there just never has been a hugely strong traditional sailing culture in the area, unlike Corpus or Clear Lake-Galveston Bay.

I'm not but people around me are. Been some pretty good storms coming through here, but I've only seen a couple light showers. Corpus and the areas a little east of me have seen a lot more of it. I'd welcome it but I'm sure the farmers wouldn't.
