wind vane?

Hi My name is Greg,I sail a 1980 freedom 40,(Whisper)I have owned for 13 years
I have been to Central America, most of the Caribbean,Bahamas,Mexico, etc.
Would like to head for Cloumbia, and Panama, next season.
Looking at installing a wind vane.
Does anyone have any info about an old Ratcliffe Marine, model (Made in Pembroke Ma) a friend gave to me.It works using your own rudder.I like the idea because I have a large transom hung rudder,it could be a problem(space) with models that have a rudder.
I am not sure this Ratcliffe would be large enouge for my boat, any ideas?
