New to Sailing

Hi everyone,

My name is Tyler and I am an aspiring recreational sailor. I have zero experience but am willing to put in the time and effort to learn. I am moving from Scottsdale, AZ to Charlottesville, VA in September to start a new job. I would like to take an instructional course or two in the fall. Is there anyone from central VA that could recommend a good sailing class? Annapolis is 3hrs away, Norfolk is also 3hrs away. Is there anywhere closer that offers quality instruction? Also, can anyone recommend a good book for a complete beginner to learn the basic terminology? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Regards,
Tyler

Re: New to Sailing

I'll let the locals respond to you about ASA schools close to your new home, but honestly the one book that rates as the authority on sailing, that you can read now, learn a lot, and will continue to read, and reread is "Chapman Piloting." I have no idea what edition they are on, but it's the definitive guide.

Re: New to Sailing

TC,

In short:

Bought a boat with no sailing experience in the fall
Took a course on sailing and seamanship thru USCGA
Read Sailing for Dummies and Annapolis Handbook during winter
Hit the water in the spring
Been sailing ro 4 years, about 1500 nm so far

So, get out there!
