Yet another new member

I've been reading the forums for the last week or so and finally decided to make my first post. As some background, I have been a power boat guy my whole life, but recently got the sailing bug real bad.

I've been out on small cats quite a few times, and for the last five years I have been going on an annual week long sail off the coast of California, usually either to Catalina or the Channel Islands. One of the guys in the group is a certified sailor and we rent a 40-something Hunter, or Benneteau. But something happened this last trip and I came away from the trip wanting to really learn to sail and take trips to other regions.

I'm definitely going to take some classes and get my ASA certification, when the weather warms up again, I just haven't decided whether to take the classes on the Lake of the Ozarks, where I have a condo and my power boats, or take them in California, which is where I really want to sail more. Oh well, a few months more to decide.

Anyway, reading all I can, and getting videos on sailing from Netflix. Oh, and can't forget the wealth of information that this forum provides. Thank you all for the that.

Welcome to SailNet. That's a great intro. Have you found any good videos on Netflix? I'm taking my first ASA training this weekend.

So far the Netflix videos have been pretty dated, but then again, I would guess the basics of sailing haven't changed in centuries. I've watched Learn to Sail by Colgate, and the Sixty Minute Sailor. And I just received The Annopolis Book of Seamanship.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply it was any one thing that gave me the sailing bug. It was more like this last trip left me wanting to sail a lot more. You see we had just been to the painted cave on Santa Cruz, facinating. We caught a strong stern wind heading to Annacapa, got to set the sails wing-to-wing, and got that 46' Benneteau over 8 knots. For a power guy, that is idling, but on that boat it felt like flying. Then when we got to Annacapa we got into a huge group of seals and just spent the day snorkeling with them. I was having a blast, but remember thinking it would have been even better if it was me and my wife, rather than me and the guys. Don't get me wrong, I love sailing, drinking wine and playing poker with the guys, but it would have been a great trip for couples too.
