Old newbie in Atl
Hi everyone.

Probably a common story. Learned to sail a while back. Sailed Savannah and the Chesapeake and some lake sailing but have been away a while.

I've been thinking of coming back. I'm looking a getting a sailboat that I can stay on over night or for a week or so at a time if needed. I'm married and have 2 daughters (7 and 9) so I need something that could sleep 4.

I thought I'd start with lake sailing (Lake Lanier N of Atl) with the idea of moving to more coastal sailing (Savannah, GA coast, SC coast) after getting re-acclimated.

I'm amazed at the quantity of quality info here and wonder if I can ever take it all in.

Just a couple of newbie questions.....

- does my plan make sense?
- how large a boat can you pull on a trailer -- 25, 28, 30?
- are there boats that can make the transition from the lake to the coast?
- did I read somewhere that Catalinas don't make good ocean boats? There seems to be a lot of those for sale around her.

Thanks to everyone for all the awesome info here on sailnet.

Hey 20, welcome to Sailnet!

Those daughters are lucky kids, sounds like a fun future you have in mind for them, and the boat sizes you're looking at 25-30 seem quite reasonable for 4 for weekends or weeks.

You're talking about coastal sailing, not true ocean, so your choice of boat, including production boats like Hunter, Beneteau and Catalina, are just fine for your circumstances. I see lots of them on the ICW down to the Bahamas, so GA and SC will be fine. You're not sailing beyond the limits of the weather forecast; just pick your days carefully. That's more fun for the kids anyway.

The toughest thing about switching from lake to coastal in that area will be getting used to the tides, which can be 9 feet in parts of GA.
