Chris from Ohio here. I'm in the process of trying to find a sailboat but could use some help. I'm looking for advice and thoughts on different manufactures. I would mostly sail around the lakes here so I can learn, but wanted something I could depend on if I take it down to the Atlantic Coast/Florida Keys after more experience. Could someone point me in the right direction please?

I have boating experience but no experience with sailboats.

Hi Chris, I think the first place to start is to decide on a budget!
I'm sure if you do a search in the forums you'll find lots of info. Everyone has lots of opinions on which type of boat is better. I learned to sail on a Contessa 26 on a large inland lake. She was heavier and slower than many of the other boats, but we weren't afraid to be out in a small craft warning, and would head out when many other boats were heading in. (We only had the weekends ... so we took her out every chance we could!)

Just starting out? I'd suggest picking up a copy of "The complete Trailer Sailor" by Brian Gilbert. He has tons of great info on small to small-ish boats, trailering and the like. It will help you ti find what you like in a boat. Then pick up a large trailer sailor, say 23 to 25 foot. Take a USCGA coarse in boating (even if you've "been around boats your whole life".). If could save your life. Then get sailing! A small boat will run $1000 to $7000 depending on what you're looking for. If you sailing, go bigger. If you, don't, sell it for what you paid and go on to something else. I suggest the upper end of trailerable because of greater flexibility, less getting wet, and more room for a bottle of Merlot and that special someone. My lovely bride and I spend up to a week at a time on our 25 footer. I bring several bottles then.
