Re: newkidontheblock

Greetings Roger and Welcome to Sailnet! I also live in Florida and have the same aspirations as you. I sold all my junk and purchased a cheap boat and am having a blast getting back into sailing with little cruises down to 10K islands and Marco from Pine Island. One day I want to sail down to Key West and enjoy it while still getting use to the boat and myself upon it.

Sailnet has tons of helpful people who could direct you to resources in and around the Florida area for brushing up on basic boating safety all the way to captain certifications.

Good luck on your journey and hope to see you at the docks.

Re: newkidontheblock

Welcome... are there nearby yacht clubs that have a casual racing weekend program? These types of boats are often shorthanded.. reliable crew can be hard to come by. This is an excellent way to get your feet wet - and if you're lucky you can get on a wide range of different boats and boat sizes to get a feel for how things go and what'll be right for you.

Learn to sail for the price of the odd case of beer.... not a bad deal. Just show up when you say you will (up here we get a lot of rain... it's annoying when someone doesn't show because of weather....)

Hi Roger, welcome to SN (SailNet), not all of us here are elitist.
Where abouts are you in Florida? We lived over down around Melbourne/Palm Bay in a town called Malabar for 26 years.

I'm still waiting for this to happen. If it works for you, come back and let me know.
