Building a Cat in PEI

Hello, I just came across this forum while browsing the net.
I'm a member of a couple of other forums but am still looking for one that "fits" me.

I'm building a 49 foot Cat in PEI Canada, and am interested in other people's experiences sailing and travelling. I'm big on learning from other people's experiences, and not big on learning from other people's conjecture.

I'm not a big contributor to forums, but I read lots.

I'm a former diesel mechanic, so may contribute there.

My wife and I have cruised from Canada to Trinidad and back on a 35 foot mono, and from Canada to Europe and back on a 39 foot mono. We got tired of all those cats bragging about speed, and even worse, they proved it by crossing the ocean in about half the time it took us. So, if you can't beat them, join them.

Thanks for reading.
Paul.

Good luck on your venture, sounds like a full time job building something that big. I am always impressed with people's ambition, seems for some there is no bounds! I have never sailed on a large cat, but I am with you on speed thing, although the new planing hulls on the latest generation of large mono's are pretty fast these days....but who can afford that technology, not many! Sounds like you are well seasoned, but can never stop learning, so sure there may be some interesting forums here to browse. I lurked here while I was restoring an old thirty foot Irwin, got several pointers and much info...

Hello, thanks for the welcome.

In regards to the cat...

It's a Kurt Hughes design, originally designed as a 45 and stretched with Kurt's blessing, by increasing the distance between each station.

The boat measures 15m, almost to the mm. It's 25 feet wide (7.6m), will have 106m2 (76m2 mainsail and 30m2 self tacking jib) of sail (about 1100sq feet), kickup rudders and daggerboards. It'll draw about 35cm in lightship condition (about 14 inches), and 60cm at dwl (about 2 feet).

At present, the hulls are built, joined, and mostly faired. Since it's pretty cold here these days, we're mostly waiting for spring before going back in the shop.

Can't post pics due to forum rules. Maybe later...

Cheers.
Paul.
