fresh meat!

hey yall,
Im Brian, 28, travelling exraordinaire. Sailed a bit on the east coast, and in the north sea of holland, trying to find more opportunities. i moved to seattle for just this reason. eagerly anticipating tall ships season, hoping to find a crew position to get my chops up, then eventually buy my own. i am steeping myself in slocum and moitessier, late night beer and knot sessions, and volunteering at the center for wooden boats. every ounce of my being is yearning for water, here i am surrounded by it, and trying to find all the ways i can get on it. i am a dishwasher, so naturally, my schedule is flexible, but my wallet is not so impressive. any tips or potential sailing buddies? thanks, bresky

Re: fresh meat!

Fresh meat indeed!
Welcome to Sailnut. There are quite a few members here who sail in your immediate area. Some of them are racers. Maybe if you can afford a reasonable beer/ale like Sierra Nevada someone might want you as crew. Of course, some racers are also shouters so just try to avoid that segment of skippers.
Sounds to me like if you just keep at what you are doing you will find some like minded sailors. I recommend getting aboard as many different kinds of boats before you set out to buy your own.
You might also want to check out the wooden boat forum if you are into 'woodies' that is.

Re: fresh meat!

Brewsky, I entered the sport by sanding the hulls of Columbia 23's where one hull equals one day of sailing. I found a charter company looking to launch additional boats and eager to trade my labor for time on the water. Try offering some varnish work in exchange for some sailing time. Good luck, you've got the bug and clearly there are maintenance needs.
