Re: Irwin 28 head help

Im located in trenton Ontario Canada the boat is 100percent sail able just cosmetic upgrades. All the stantions leaked and caused the teak and backing to rot so all that has been pulled out Any mold has been removes which was barely any... Mostly just getting an all around upgrade to make it more enjoyable it will be a moving cottage

Re: Irwin 28 head help

The only major job which isn't to major for me because I do it all the time is replacing the core in the cockpit. The cockpit apparently has been bubbled for a while which means the fiberglass has separated from the core so I'm going to cut out the old fiberglass recore it and at the same time I'm thinking of removing the fuel tank and replacing it with a plastic one the same size and this way I will be able to have a sender on the tank to tell me my fuel level instead of having to dip a dirty stick in the tank all the time. Also this winter I'm redoing all the electrical and charging systems... I got about a hundred projects on the go defiantly a money pit but keeps me busy but most of the stuff I fabricate my self I am starting a blog to show the progress

Re: Irwin 28 head help

Just food for thought....regarding your fuel tank, I don't know how big your engine is, how big your fuel tank is or how much motoring you plan on doing. If I ever replace my tank, it will be for a smaller one. Reason...I've never used a full tank of fuel in one season.
My first sailboat that I had for 4 years had a 15 gallon tank. I never used more than 8-9 gallons in a season. The boat I now have has a 25 gallon tank. My first season, I did do two long trips and I may have used 20 gallons for the season. Haven't used more than 12-15 gallons a season since. Point I'm making, I always have old fuel in my tank because it never gets used up.

Re: Irwin 28 head help

I have a '76 Irwin 28 and the holding tank is located port side under the bow berth. The toilet is pretty standard for a boat with the manual pump etc. Your pump out port should be located about midship on the portside deck.

Re: Irwin 28 head help

Hey thanks for the info is it under the water holding tank in the berth or right against the wall was yours fiberglass ed in place . Pics would be great. The only tank I have in the bow berth is the water holding tank I upgraded mine Btw to have a powered pump and quick connect fittings for water pressure

Re: Irwin 28 head help

I will try to take some pics of it this weekend for you when I get back out to the lake. my fresh water holding tank is under the V-berth, the potty holding tank is right next to it on the port side of the boat also under the V-berth and farther aft than the fresh water tank. Not a very big potty holding tank, 8 gallons max I think if that. Not glassed in I don't believe. I will take some pics of the potty tank, piping and the head and you can compare to yours and see if it looks like it will work on yours. the piping goes straight from the head which is just aft of the V-berth on the port side and thru a bulkhead down low and close to inside of hull to the potty tank. there is another line that goes up to the port side deck about fore-midship to pump out the potty tank. There is also a pressure pump from the fresh tank to supply water to the sink in the head and to the galley sink. I'll try to post back here after this next weekend so you can see.

Re: Irwin 28 head help

Congrats on your Irwin 28. I've got an Irwin 32 1972 with holding tank under v-berth. Yours may differ. There are two very active Irwin lists on yahoo groups: irwinsailboats and irwinsailboatskippers. Also there is an Irwin group on Facebook. Posting your questions there will get you in touch with other owners of the boat you have.
best of luck,
Vince
