sanding the hull

I own a 1971 irwin 38 which has sat in the water for 10 years and just had the hull scrapped during this time. I have just hauled the boat out the water and surprise the hull has blisters everywhere. I got a quote for $5500 to do the work (suction sanding past the gel coat 1/8" + 6 coats barrier + bottom paint) without touching the through-holes, which was an extra $2500. The sail boat water line is roughly 30 ft with a 3.6 draft. Is this price close to what the norm is for this type of work and watercraft?

If they do what they said and it includes the materials I would say that sounds OK. I don't know where you're located, but here in MI they would charge $750 per coat and that's cleaning and applying, no sanding. So your price looks fine, but he extra for thru-hull surprises me.

I did all the sanding, and sanding, and sanding, and priming, and priming, and painting and painting, myself this spring and here's the result. Now she looks like a Classic Irwin should look.
