To remove prop shaft does rudder need to come off?

To remove prop shaft does rudder need to come off?
My shaft is slightly bent. It has been that way for 10 years.
Considering replacing the shaft. Thanks in advance.

Hopefully an Irwin owner can say for sure, but by taking some simple measurements, and checking the shaft alignment with the rudder you should be able to determine what's necessary. If the rudder is 'in the way' than you'll need as much distance between the strut/cutlass and the rudder as the shaft is long.

On many raked spade rudders they may well create enough clearance when turned fully to one side.... On our last boat I could change the shaft, it slid by the rudder blade but only if the prop was off....

you didn't say what model it is I had two irwins. the shaft was removable with no problems. Just remove the shaft from the engine flange and pull it out.

You may already have this planned, but recommend you evaluate your cutlass bearing (bent shaft for ten years likely means it needs replacement) and the condition of your shaft log...and replace the reinforced hose between the log and shaft packing gland while you have the shaft out.

Good luck.
