Shipping a Boat

I'll be shipping my IP-350-3 from Maryland to the Midwest in August, I know there is a hieght limitation for shipping on the road. When I remove the sails, bimini, dodger, etc... Will I need to remove the Hoyt Boom as well, or can I lash that down?
Any other advice for a first time shipper?

Your chosen carrier will have to get permits for each state the boat travels thru, and there is no consistancy in regs; the permit issuer is supposed to check clearances.

I've been out of the truck business for a while, but I believe the Fed. regs require 13'6" clearance on all interstates. Even if you meet this, and I think it's going to be close, the problem is local roads. The entire route has to be checked town by town, bridge by bridge.

Not to give you concern, but during the Cuban Crisis, I was taking a truck convoy thru FL and we had a forklift on a flat bed. The marking on the bridge said we had enough clearance; we didn't, and dumped the forklift on the main road thru town during the middle of morning rush hour! What a mess!

Yes the same boat - We were out to visit Jim and Marcy last week in PA. She was kept in excellent condition and we could not pass her up. It's too bad we could not keep her out east. Living in the midwest does put limits on how much water one can sail. I'll check with the local IP dealer as well (sailors world) to see what experience they have had. I may just have to drop a tape measure to the water line and figure it out.

The IPODG is on Sail Net's site. Log onto sailnet.net, look for discussion groups and pick the Island Packet. You have to join (log in) to Sail Net, but they don't flood you with ads and there is no charge for membership. It is a great source for info on all IP's--problems, questions, solutions, etc
