1981 Islander Bahama 30 Topping Lift
For you IB30 guys out there - my new-to-me Islander 30 is now back in the water! - Rigging the mast we noticed she did not have a topping lift - even though the original drawings seem to indicate it was included in the original rigging.
I have noticed that the boom is wired to the back stay and I can't imagine this was standard either - could some one please post or PM me a picture of how the topping rig is supposed to be rigged for this boat?

Thanks all,
Eric (ECS-IB30)

Re: 1981 Islander Bahama 30 Topping Lift
This kind of thing isn't really 'boat specific'... it can be whatever you want it to be.

"wired to the backstay" sounds like a temporary pennant that supports the boom when you're not sailing. It's not as good as a real topping lift because it's not very effective when you want to support the boom while reefing.

A fixed topping lift from the masthead to end of boom, with a short adjustment tackle at the boom end works well, or the TL can be run to the masthead, down the mast and aft to the cockpit for easier adjustment. Either option requires a trip to the masthead to set it up (to add a block or shackle for the lift) if it's not already there.

Re: 1981 Islander Bahama 30 Topping Lift
Thanks for quick reply - I'll peek at some of the other sailboats in my marina and see how they're rigged and make a choice from there - I've got to go up the mast anyways to repair a spreader light and replace the windex both of which were damaged during rigging....

Re: 1981 Islander Bahama 30 Topping Lift
I have a B 30 that had both a topping lift on the backstay and one going to the top of the mast. I got rid of both, and put a BoomKicker vang on. They make the boom self supporting by using a couple of fiberglass tension rods. Love it WAY better than a topping lift. there are no lines getting in the way.
