islander 28...new owner and hull number question

Please excuse typos, sending from my google pad and having some issues with editing...

Hello, new owner here...as this is day 1 of my ownership, I do not have a lot to ask....in time, I trust this will change...I purchased a 1976 i28 in really nice condition, well kept...the boat lived in marin county and prior to that pier 39 in san francisco...boat name gypsy baron 2...if you know the boat please let me know..

The hull number on my Islander 28, engraved on the plaque in the engine compartment is 2828...given they only made some 400 boats, do all hull numbers start with 28, and the following digits are the hull number?

My boat is a 1976 so I would imagine they were not yet up to 100 boats made yet, as i believe production started in 1975, so perhaps my boat is hull number 28...

interesting. my 1976 I28 HIN is XLYE2908M76I. no idea what that means or implies.

welcome to what i believe is a very nice sailing boat, in so many ways.

enjoy,

Re: islander 28...new owner and hull number question

The HIN number, more properly known as the HIN/MIC (hull identification number/manufacturers identification code) should be on the upper starboard transom of all boats manufactured after 1971.

For a complete explanation of the code see "What's a HIN ?"

Re: islander 28...new owner and hull number question

Well, I looked at my survey and found my HIN...XLYE2828M76D, so, November of 1976.

Still would like to know what number I28 this was to come of the 'assembly line'...I have seen reference to 400 or so boats made, I would think that they would have numbered each boat? Maybe?

This is such useless info, haha, just trying to create a history for my new I28...

Great boat! Best balanced boat I have ever sailed and I have been at it for 50+ years. I wish it was a 36". Ha!

Re: islander 28...new owner and hull number question

Thank you for the reply...I am so happy with the boat. In the week I have had her, I have sailed 4 times, first, the maiden voyage from Sausalito to Coyote Point (san Mateo) where she now lives...

The second, a quick day sail with my kids up to Brisbane and back...

The last two sails book-ended an overnight in San Francisco. My wife and kids sailed up to San Francisco Marina, spent the night in the City, then sailed home the next day...our entrance into the Central Bay late Saturday afternoon was a bit much for my wife and kids...it was blowing hard with moderate swells...the boat performed marvelously, insitlling confidence the whole time..

The overnight with the family was roomy enough...

Look forward to more times with my 'new' I28!

Re: islander 28...new owner and hull number question

I'm also a "new" I28 owner (also a 1976) within the last four weeks. Finally launched last weekend and hoping to get a few day sails in before we have to pull her out for the winter.

Very excited, and glad there's an Islander community on here!
