Islander 21 - Parts/Cushions question

Hello All,

Is there anywhere I can look for used or cheap cushions? Ive been looking into making my own (using the old original main sail for the covers).

I wanted to start at least with the 2 cockpit bench cushions, then work my way inside.

Re: Islander 21 - Parts/Cushions question

Interesting idea using the old sail for cushion covers. There are used foams for v-berths on my local Craigslist right now, I've used a couple throw outs from a local canvas shop, and there seem to be a few sail boat wrecking yards now, but that's about all I can think of for used cushions.

As one who would never wish to discourage a do-it-your-selfer trying to save money, I don't recommend using an old mainsail as material for making covers/cushions even for practice. Not that it couldn't work, but I don't think you will be happy with the results. I know that buying more appropriate materials can be expensive. But making cushions is a lot of work. Shop around for some short rolls or something like that. Finding used cushions that fit may be hard but not impossible. And turning something that's the wrong size into the right size will probably be extremely frustrating.

Best of luck with your boat.

Ok...I get this. You want to use the main sail to make your cushions out of. Main sail is now a nice set of cushions. But I have a question? What are you going to use to then make your main sail out of? :-)

Re: Islander 21 - Parts/Cushions question

The cushions inside my Islander 21' don't look that hard to make, I took the cover off to air one of mine out and it's just foam.

I can't control the wind but I can adjust the sail. ― Ricky Skaggs
