Islander 28 cockpit drain freezing issue?

Freezing of the cockpit drain hoses is a problem during winter storage. The routing required to get past the rudder post and across to the opposite side of the hull requires "dips" in the drain hose that can stay full of water and freeze solid. I added a third cockpit drain that I connect by a removable hose directly to and out through the garboard plug. I installed the garboard plug after a near disaster during a February storm several years ago.

Has anyone resolved this problem. I could relocate the cockpit drain outlets? They would need to move aft and down the hull. It would be a lot of work. Wondering if they "fixed" this problem on later models? It would be nice to have these drain hoses empty themselves when the boat is level.

The additional cockpit drain works as a winter backup. It also lets us collect rain water by putting drain stopper over the regular drains and collecting the rainwater in a jug.

Drains can freeze even when there are no dips/siphons in them. Gradual buildup of ice can plug them up over time. You really need to have a cover over your cockpit in winter, preventing flooding of your boat.

Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.

Really? I do cover the boat. Thanks. I am hoping someone has a specific idea about the question I am raising. There are yards that won't store a boat with a cover without a garboard plug. Covers are no guarantee.
