Hello to Islander owners (especially the 28’s).
I just entered an introductory post in the “Introduce Yourself” forum. Here, I’ll mention a bit about the boat.
It’s a 1976 Islander 28, Hull # 108. It is rigged with the standard mainsail and a 150% genoa on roller
furling. I also have the original
jib and an asymmetrical
spinnaker that I don’t know how to use yet. Backup propulsion is a Yanmar 2GM20F diesel. The boat was launched as “Easy Night”, and at some point renamed “Drifter”. When (if?) I get to cosmetics I’ll be renaming it “Skipaway”.
This boat is cosmetically nice, but has some “issues”!
The prior owner had a survey when he bought it 5 years ago. From what I can tell, the survey was after he bought it and he decided it wasn’t worth doing anything. (I bought it without having a new survey knowing this.) Issues include: frozen seacocks, possible keel bolt corrosion, blisters, prop strut needs rebedding, 18 other items that are minor & I can take care of myself.
The nearest haul out facility is 30 NM away (Astoria, Oregon — I still have to decide whether to go to Astoria, Ilwaco, Washington, or Portland, Oregon), so I’ll continue to daysail locally; while I figure out my what & how to-do list, and address legal and safety issues for the trip.
I do a lot of solo sailing, so I also plan to do some running
rigging rerouting.
My worst case is that the marina slip was transferred, so I don’t have a 5 year wait if I buy another boat.
So, expect to hear from me in this and other forums. I hope to reach a point where I can actually contribute something as I progress.
